2023/5/16
On 16th May, Launching Ceremony of the project of emergency humanitarian food and nutrition assistance through the World Food Programme (WFP) financed by the Government of Japan was held in the WFP Logistics Base in Banjul in the presence of Hon Dr Ahmadou Lamin Samateh, Minister of Health, Deputy Executive Director, Mr Sana Dahaba, Executive Director of the National Disaster Management Agency, Mr Yasuhiro Tsumura, WFP Representative and Country Director in The Gambia, and HEMr IZAWA Osamu, Ambassador of Japan in The Gambia.
The Gambia is experiencing its worst food insecurity in a decade due to the effects of climate change, such as reduced rainfall and storms, and the impact of the COVID-19 on economic and social activities. Russia’s invasion in Ukraine deteriorates the complicated nutritional situation in The Gambia. Under these circumstances, this assistance is expected to contribute to improving food security by distributing food to vulnerable households and providing nutritional food for infants and pregnant and lactating women.
Rice, beans, salt and corn soya blended plus (CSB+) procured through this assistance were handed over to the government of The Gambia at this ceremony.
