Japanese Government granted the funds for 2 projects against Ebola epidemic in The Gambia
On 27th November 2015, a ceremony concerning the following two projects against Ebola was held in Banjul, the capital of The Gambia.
First project is supported by The Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects of Japan entitled “The project for the reinforcement of prevention and control of febrile illnesses” (88,369 Euros). In this project, the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare will introduce 3 Japanese made thermography equipments (with the most advanced technology) for the Banjul International Airport as one of gateways to the world. These equipment will contribute to preventing the virus like Ebola from entering the territory of The Gambia, and also they will be effective to avoid the spread of the virus from The Gambia.
His Excellency Mr. Takashi KITAHARA, Ambassador of Japan to Senegal, and His Excellency Mr. Omar SEY, Minister of Health and Social Welfare signed the Grant Contract of this project in the ceremony.
Second project entitled “Support to National Ebola Prevention and Preparedness in The Gambia” is planned and implemented by UNDP through Japanese financial contribution, which totally amounts about 1,600,000 US dollars. This project has been already launched in March 2015 for the purpose of complementing The Gambia’s National Ebola Virus Disease Plan which has been decided for struggling against Ebola which had raged in West African countries and had caused over eleven thousands of deaths. The principal objectives of this project is to ensure proper coordination of the preparedness and outbreak response activities at all levels and to strengthen national capacities for Ebola prevention and preparedness among health workers at central and community levels through one year’s program.
In the ceremony, The Ebola treatment center and 5 ambulances which were rehabilitated and purchased in the program were unveiled to the participants.
